Suggest going back to old "popular" algorithm.....or dividing popular filters into two catagories.....one entitled "Most Used" with old algorithm.....and one entitled "Currently Popular" with new algorithm.....
The problem with the new "Popular" algorithm is that it is registering the initial "test drives" of newly submitted filters.....which can be deceptive when a sub-op looks good, creates an initial draw, and subsequently posts up in the "Popular" catagory because of it.....creating like a false-positive draw.....when it's obvious that the filter really isn't that good or useful.....and usage/popularity should be low on it......
For example, a new user sees a filter at the top of the new "Popular" catagory.....checks it out......finds out that it is a sub-op and not useful at all.....gets more sub-ops the same way.....and ends up being misled to think that FF's best filters aren't very good.....
IMHO, the old "popular" algorithm is much better than the new one.....because it kept all the best quality, most useful filters on top.....and shows FF in "best light" when users go to grab filters from the top of the popular catagory.....

popular is popular, not 'we want to give this a chance to become popular'. i thought the 'recent' category fulfilled giving new filters a shot at being popular? so, why now give them even more exposure and thus relagate truely popular filters to something less than that.
now, there is a bit of a loophole in the 'popular' category that's always been there... time. 'popular' can mean 'all time most popular', but it can also mean 'currently popular', as in being used a lot right now, which isnt the same necessarily as all time popular.
so, rather than alter the 'popular' routine, i'd leave that one as 'all time most popular' and start a new, additional category of 'currently most popular'. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Craig, they changed it already......check it out.....
FF posted this about it.....
" Our list of popular filters has been stale for years, due to a rigid ranking algorithm. We're going to shake things up a little -- the new algorithm we're testing gives more weight to newer filters, so the list will be more dynamic. Check it out and let us know what you think!"
.....are my eyes deceiving me.....or are we in agreement on this one???

Speaking of the algo itself: it's very simple and flexible, so there's a lot of room for fine-tuning. We'll see how it works in the longer run and tweak it in the process.

Hey Vlad.....how about keeping "Popular" with the new algo.....and adding a new "Most Used" tab with the old algo???
The old algo just seems to be a much better representation of "usefulness", IMHO.... Steve

We may re-introduce the old rigid algo and implement the All-Time Popular tab, but I don't want to do it now. The old algo reinforces "the rich get richer" loop, so I'd like to give newer filters a chance to get some downloads and usage before the older ones are back.

What about a Hall of Fame approach that pulls the consistently high ranking filters out to allow room for the newcomers.
Then if you institute a weighted rank for new filters that fades over time you could allow the best to bubble up. This would be an alternative to a tab for "best of the new filters"

you get what you reward. the reason they are 'richer' is because they are good. folks like good. good shld be rewarded.
but, i also understand your want for rewarded and exposing new filters. i just dont think you can do either well by combining the two concepts into one category. it's an obvious two cat situation. combining only dilutes both. I must concur with Craig....
I understand what you are trying to do as well.....but to be perfectly honest, the old filters at the "top of the loop" are of much better qualilty and usefulness than the new filters that you are now getting.....and the good filters that you do get here and there, seem to be climbing the ranks like they should to join the upper echelon of popular filters.....which indicates to me that your old algo was working quite well.....

I think that's what should be happenning with the best quality and most useful filters.....until better, more useful filters come along to take "usage" away from them.....

Kinda like pulling the first string to give the second string some playing time, eh??? I do understand that there is a usage handicap for V2 filters since most users still have V1.....but like I said, the initial new/try-it-because-it-looks-cool usage will put alot of sub-ops on top.....and might hurt FF in initial filter quality "appearance" when potential customers/beta users check out what they think should be all the best filters at the top of the 'Popular' catagory.....
Personally, I would want all the very best filters right there up top on the first page of the 'Popular' catagory because it is what everyone looks at first.....and plays a big part in selling the program, IMHO..... Steve
