Not all control situations in a filter go well in hand with the Next Variant randomization scheme.

For example controls that are related to optimizations, precision settings and temporary tweaking modes that e.g. changes the rendering view of a bomber filter to one of its particles instead of the whole "bombed" view.

I suggest adding a checkbox option in all Control components called 'Randomizable', like the option we have in the Noise Curve. This way we can exclude certain "meta" controls from the randomization functionality

Sort of like this?

btw: randomizer locks seem to be a high priority thing; seems like it gets suggested every few months or so. It's a Planned - Low Priority item, according to the Wishlist.

No, not like that, though its a great related idea.

What I mean is purely at design time stage, like when you define control remapping:

When "Randomizable" is checked, the control can be randomized by the "Next Variant" function.

This could be combined with the mock-up you presented. Perhaps as a third mode, "Default".

Actually, if they introduce this popup menu button (related to the new image mapping stuff), these settings could be available in the popup menu (so the UI is not cluttered too much..)

Something like this, where "default" is the settings defined in each control (see previous mockup):
