While the implementation of new patterns obviously has abysmally low priority in the current state of FF, ...

Our codebase for pattern components is currently based on rounded rectangles, and to introduce hexagonal tiling (or any tiling based on non-rectangular polygons) will require a new codebase. We'll probably rewrite it in the future, but this is currently a low-priority item.

... I thought it might be nice to have a thread where we can compile our pattern wishes. smile:)

Truchet Tiling

Cool. If I understand it correctly, then this component would be a pattern generator rather than a pattern, and in a way be similar to Kaleidoscope in that it would require a source image input. This source image would be filled into each tile, but rotated randomly in 90 degree steps.

Should be quite useful. smile:D

Reproducing the original pattern with the triangles is easy, but making it work with ANY input and introducing random rotation at each tile is the challenge.

Here's a quicky of the easy part... smile:D

Hey, actually it should be possible to truchet tile the lifesaver image. We just need to do four of Quasimondo's 'Flex Tilings', one for each of the possible 90 degree rotations, then blend the results via some thresholded black and white tiles...

Somebody should do the honors... I'm too tired. smile:D

Btw... here's my Spiral 'snippet' from above. I really wish we had a dedicated component for the many types of spirals and vortex/whirlpool shapes there are.

Puh! That was one repetitive sucker to build. And it only works on square images... smile:(

a PIPE/TUBE GENERATOR...

No fancy dials/wheels as in the stupid example below, just random mazes of pipes/tubes with control over the profile.

This is no l-system but a pattern of sorts that I had been working on. Need to mess with more patterns using this to find out what its also good for. Heres a pict

I'm currently absorbing some info about Texture Maker, just to see if it might be a worthy addition to the arsenal or not. While it seems that 99% of what you can do with TM can already be done by PS+FF, I came across some interesting stuff concerning patterns nevertheless:

Rule-based Pattern Generator

Expression Pattern Generator

Mandelbrot Generator

Matrix Generator

Also, this one seems interesting:

Script Distortion

IMO all their script- and expression-based stuff should be integrated in one place. Mandelbrot is nice (already on the long-term list).

That was my impression as well. It would be nice to have one versatile component doing this.

Going over all the different functions in Texture Maker, it occured to me how nicely generalized everything in FF is. The Distortions and Distractions sections were particularly illuminating in this regard, as they can be boiled down to an Offset component plus a Noise/Pattern in most cases. Except for maybe this one.

I guess this can be generalized as a Bomber with spiky/hairy particles colored after the pixel at their center.

'Bomber' is just a fancy term for a particle generator, a component that 'sprays'/'bombs'/'scatters' particles over an image.

I might be interpreting too much into this, but I appears that - under the 'hood' - we are getting closer to those particle ideas set forth elsewhere... smile;) smile:D

thanks, dilla.

so, how is a 'bomber' any different from 'add noise'? and would you consider 'add noise' to be a bomber?

i'm guessing that a bomber might have far more capabilities than a simple add noise, but if you could point me to some examples of images using bombers, that might help.

Well, a bomber sprinkles 'sprites' over an image (sprites being geometric primitive shapes, or images themselves).

Common applications for bombers would be simulating fire, explosions, smoke, flowing water, sparks, falling leaves, clouds, fog, snow, dust, meteor trails, etc.

hmmm, ok. sprites... last time i used anything called a sprite was when i had my C-64. these were machine resident/generated animators of sorts. objects that you could move around and collide with other stuff, like the arcade game space invaders or pac man. the moving objects were sprites. there were also 'bobs' or blitter objects. these were the same thing, only not chip-resident, so you could make as many as you wanted. they were just slower as you added more. the sprites were limited to 16, iirc.

so, ok, i take what you said and it sounds a lot like overlays, only more animated and fluid in nature.

thanks, dilla.
