One of the very good and excellent upgrades for FF 3.0 was the adding of additional built-in images so you did not have to always use the Lifesaver.

I showed my happiness in this thread

Built-in preview images of FF 3.0 are really excellent and much better

Here is the thread about this in the Beta 3.0 Forum

FF3.0 Q&A: Built-In Preview Images

Quote
Vladimir Golovin wrote in the Sphinx thread shown below

All I can say that there's nothing (besides minor UI issues and perhaps introducing too much visual clutter into the Filter Library thumbnails) that prevents us from adding more previews. They can even be grouped by categories.

In other words, I don't rule out the possibility of adding more images in the future.

Now that we are near from the release of the Beta FF 4.0 I was thinking that would be very good and useful if this feature could be enlarged and add more built-in images that I think would be good to have too.

uberzev suggested in this thread to have also Non-Square built in images, and I agree with him.

USEFUL BUILT-IN IMAGES SUGGESTIONS FROM MYSELF

1 - Have one (or more) non-square image instead of only square images.

2 - Have one (or more) plain textured backgound built-in image

3 - Have one black and white gradient image

4 - Have Two (Male and Female) Human Portraits (or more) so is more easy for some filters to show well

5 - Have one plain white background

6 - Have one plain Black background

7 - Have one plain 50% gray background

SPHINX WELL DONE BUILT-IN IMAGES SUGGESTIONS

In this thread Considerations about built-in preview images

Looking at the current set of built-in preview images, it occurs to me that the selection is "too perfect" and misses some essential features for demo/example usage.

1. No HDR images
2. No gradual transparency images
3. All perfectly adjusted
4. All noiseless and high quality
5. No B/W's

Users will be accustomed to the default look and feel of the preview images over time. Therefore it is important that certain features are in the images by default, so it is clear what impact a filter has.

No HDR images
If we are to demonstrate HDR specific processing, we have to fabricate a fake over exposure which is far from ideal. A few nice HDR images are most welcome in the sample set.

No gradual transparency images
Like discussed elsewhere, the current set mainly contains "binary" alpha masks, i.e. no large region alpha fading etc. This is not very useful for demonstration of neat blending filters.

All perfectly adjusted
If we are to demonstrate adjustment filters, we need images that needs adjustment. The current set is all too perfect.

All noiseless and high quality
The current images look really good. How about a few ones with natural under-lighting noise, compression noise, dust and scratches etc? This way we can demonstrate various kinds of noise reduction filters.

No B/W's
This one might seem simple: why not just desaturate one the existing images? The point earlier in the post is about what users are accustomed to look at. If we have general B/W image, we intuitively know that any filter that presents this image with coloring of some sort, is using a B/W source.

So any other thoughts on the sample preview set?

All excellent points! (wish I made them)

Yes, agree with Uber, all excellent points.

All I can say that there's nothing (besides minor UI issues and perhaps introducing too much visual clutter into the Filter Library thumbnails) that prevents us from adding more previews. They can even be grouped by categories. The rule is, once added, a preview cannot be removed from FF, because there will be filters rendered with this preview in the Filter Library.

In other words, I don't rule out the possibility of adding more images in the future.

Thanks very much

I think that this new built-in image suggestions could be useful also to show texturing filters that are based on mixing one photo and a texture, and as it is now with the available Built-images you can´t show how this filter could work in the presets as you would be forced to show it with mixing two built-in image which will give a horrible result instead of the good one a texture could give if this could be available as built-in

I have been making some tests with a new filter and to show really what the filter can do would be needed to have a black and white built image background to avoid using FF components to make them and be more difficult to configure and would be much easier to test some filters and some components results.

Don't you think these are very situational? If anything it sounds like you're trying to rely on built-in images to sell an effect. It just sounds like that. Maybe I read you wrong. I donno. Probably some visual clues on what you mean would help.

I think the reasoning behind having more built in images is that some times the effect doesn't show well in the previews on the filter page. Take Pin Up Posters by CFandM for example. It only works well with pictures of people, and none of the previes show how wonderful this filter is.

Adding more preview images may help, if there are enough different kinds of images. Then again, there's no guaranty that even with 20 built in images you will find what you are looking for (In the case of noise\scratch removal filters for example - Unless FF inc includes 'bad' images).

I ask again if it would be possible to have more built in images inside FF4.0.

The above ones are ONLY suggestions of course, and is not needed to have ALL of them, but would be good to have some more (at least 2 or 3 more to have 10 ) than the ones already available.

Personally I think we have enough preview images. the only thing I could think of that might be useful would be a black and white one.

Is there any possible plan to add more built-in images in FF 4.0 or will keep exactly the same ones?

I mean that all the available ones are all square ones, and there is none that is rectangular, and I think would be good to have at least one for filters that do not follow only the square ratio.

Yeah but the program's designed around squares. The website is designed around squares.

You got even grids, even spacing, even everything. It's in a neat, organized row and column system because they're squares. Seems like having non-square ratios means breaking that order unless you stretch, crop, or letterbox the image to fit the 1:1 aspect ratio.

I have one request more and suggestion, when making a filter that uses custom blend modes, is difficult an bad to make a preset that shows right the result with the available built-in images, and it would be good to have at least one built-in image that would be a texture that instead of a photo, so it could be mixed with the others built-in images and look good, and would be just adding one and only image more so it would not be needed to change the interface and would not clutter what is available now
