Hi devs, its a pain in the ass having to sit around waiting for thumbnails to render. Is there a way to have FF just catch up with what people have downloaded? It would be nice not to have to wait 20-30 seconds for each unrendered thumbnail to render. I've brought this up before.

Thanks
AC

Yeah, that would be nice.
It could be either a button that is pressed, or an automated render while screen saver is active. smile:)

Or an option to name presets, then you would at least know which one to click if it´s not rendered yet lol.

I think that the thumbnails (from the presets, filter editor and filter browser) and previews in FF are made always by the render engine of FF, so I think that it depends totally on the speed of the filter and the settings you have put.

SO I think that this can not be changed or optimized whitout changing the render engine, and FF Inc. has told that they will not change or modify the render engine, so you will need to wait this amount of seconds until seeing the thumbnail icon generated.

Unless they could make another different render engine for thumbnails, but I do not think they will do this.

SR, what you are talking about is the speed at which the thumbnails are generated. We are talking about having them generated in the background, even if you are not currently using a certain filter.
For example, if you download 3 new filters, and look at filter #1, it's thumbnails will be generated one by one, but when it's finished FF won't automatically render the thumbnails of #2 and #3. Only when you click on filter #2 FF will start render it's thumbnails, and so on. Now what if you download over 9000 filters?

You can purchase a filter library backup which contains all filters with thumbnails.

I agree, it would be great to have thumbnails render in the background.. We could even leave our copy of FF open overnight each night and just let it run.

Another annoying thing about the thumbnails is that, at least for me, they don't continue rendering below the visible amount of thumbnails.. So, for example, if your thumbnail area is stretched vertically to show 15 thumbnails, and all 15 of those finish rendering, I have to scroll that visible area lower or none of the lower ones will render.. that's horribly inefficient..

And buying a filter library backup disc doesn't help if we need to recreate thousands of thumbnails for custom presets in the event of a crash or drive corruption. Having to babysit the program while it creates thumbnails is a bottleneck to any workflow.

Would be cool if FF did this as a low priority background process, or whenever the user is idle.

Just migrated all my downloaded filters from my laptop to an offline workstation, and yeah, the "GUI babysitting" is pretty inconvenient. I get the "evaluate only when necessary" philosophy behind this approach, but still, I imagine this behavior can be rather irritating to some users.

Side-note: Because all local filters would have to be "executed" in the background, this might be a security risk with filters using unsafe scripts, and it might be a problem with very slow filters too. Hmmm... smile:|

In case anyone gets to this part of the thread four years later, this is something you should know that came from FF Support today regarding the thumbnails...

"Yes, Filter Library Backup (as well as Librarian) contains pre-rendered thumbnails for all filters, but not for presets.

Best regards,
Filter Forge Support"

However, I'm now using a macro program to go "down" the presets and pause for three minutes while rendering them. So far, so good. It's called Pulovers Macro Creator-Portable.

It's ridiculous that you should have to buy an additional product or have to sit and wait (or use a macro solution) just to get the thumbnails to appear. It's very short-sighted from a usability perspective, but since going on 5 years and the only answer is "buy our thingy that does 1/2 of what you need," I guess the macro is the best option.

For what it's worth, I think the preset thumbnails should be customizable i.e. when a preview has rendered (or a full size) in the app, I should have the option of assigning that as the preset or filter thumbnail.
