it would be nice if there was a place on the forums (or on the site if it's not possible to do in the forums) to be able to post our own hand made environments. since the file size on the forums is only 500k and most environments are well over that, i suppose it would have to be at least a separate sub-forum, if the individual forums can have their own file size limit, or somewhere else on the site. at any rate, it would be nice to be able to exchange these with others.
If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is a hand made environment?

In FilterForge the nice shading/reflections comes partially from the HDRI environment maps. These are spherical panoramas that basically create an "environment" in which we can realistically light and reflect surface shading off of. Anyway... so you can load custom spherical HDRI maps into FF for different lighting effects. These you can make by taking a spherical HDR (360) panoramic photographs, or you can synthetically generate them with 3D programs, or even in FilterForge (there are a couple filters here that do the lighting for you).
The thing is the lighting method in FF generates lovely realistic material. By default we do get a couple... but we can always enjoy more. I'd be happy to post a couple of my own as well. Note on the part with the suggestion we can always find a separate host for it. But it'd be also nice if FilterForge has a place for it too. |

Thanks Skybase, thanks for explaining it, I understand now, I totally forgot about the HDRI enviromment that is available in the surface filters on the Lighting tab, as I have never used any custom one, just the default built-in.
I agree that would be good to share and have additional custom HDRI environments inside FF, as I found that with my Photo Crystal Marbles Maker filter it would benefit from better HDRI environment |

Craig, our Filter Forge wiki allows uploading large files. I'm confident a wiki page is the best place to share environments.

Soo... I started editing one: http://filterforge.com/wiki/index.php..._HDRI_Maps
We'll need a unified format just to keep it clean. OpenEXR, 1000x500px, zipped? For upload include unified size jpeg preview (maybe 900x450). |
