The window of the menu for ordering the controls is ok with simple filters, but it is too small when we use filters with many controls.

Would it be possible to make it bigger ( or let us enlarge it ) ?
Sometimes it takes me a lot of time for ordering the controls of big filters, because I must continuously scroll up/down the list.
If we could see a bigger part of the list, we could avoid to scroll up/down too many times.

Filter Forge 1.0 had a limit of 10 controls per filter. I sometimes think it was a good thing from the user side.

I agree with Ramlyn very much and is true that sometimes with 20 or more controls it gets more difficult as you have to scroll up and down very much, although using the keyboard shortcuts is easier than using the mouse

Would be godd if the window could be taller or resizable to be able to fit more controls shown

thanks

I agree with GMM. Too many controls are intimidating and with many filters the render time makes it too time-consuming to try altering them to see what they do. Also, changing some control settings often yields results that have no similarity whatsoever with the filter's stated purpose. Maybe if FF allowed the insertion of explanatory headers in the Settings GUI I wouldn't mind as much.

The 'rollover tooltips' would be great to compensate for the namespace limitation too.

Multiple drag and drop functionality in the order list would also be nice.

For GMM : I understand. Filter Forge 1 was Filter Forge 1. It had a lot of characteristics that were changed in the following versions. Anyway I only suggested a thing that in my opinion can be useful. Then it is up to Filter Forge makers decide if it is worth to add it or not. smile;)

For EAdams : Yes, you are right, filters with many controls are also big filters, even if not always ( sometimes the creator simply decided to let you have many options to change the final result ). Anyway, when we create a filter, it doesn't always mean that we will upload it in the library. For example, I made filters that have over 300 controls. I didn't even try to upload them because they are huge, but I enjoy to make and test them anyway. Sometimes they may be the start for smaller and faster filters or the hint for some new filter.
I may need to have a good way to work on these filters even if I will never upload them.
I also add that there are already many things that differs fr om the filters we can save in our own Filter Forge and the filters that we can upload in the library. For example, a filter with more than 20 presets can't be uploaded, but you can still save it in your own Filter Forge.
If having many controls is a problem when we upload a filter, they can put a lim it in the uploading system, but still let us work with hundreds of controls in our own computer, if we like it. smile;)

...and for the love of goats, please make the custom order persist! I can't believe how much time I have wasted having to re-order a custom order after making minor re-connections. ARGH!

Edit: The hasty rant diffused by seeing the following as unofficially planned in http://filterforge.com/wiki/index.php/Feature_Wishlist

My vote too. Despite what FF says (keep things linked, never detach etc) about keeping the order of controls, even on a short set of controls I am constantly rearranging the controls, especially when experimenting. A simple lock (a checkbox?) for custom mode to keep the controls in order (and add any new controls to the bottom of the list) would save me HOURS of time when experimenting with a filter. And if you have a long list of controls, forget it, I don't even try to rearrange them until I'm done.

To me this almost seems like treating the filter writers like children: don't use too many controls, don't detach items, use auto mode and place your controls "perfectly" so that you don't need custom mode... Frankly, Auto mode is useless if you have more than a few controls. Auto mode works best when all the controls can be put in 1 place or somehow arranged perfectly left->right, top->bottom, usually not practical or visually not easy to look at.

Again, I understand the fundamental philosophy of less controls is more, but this is purely a USER INTERFACE issue IMHO. My 2 cents. No insults intended, but this issue is a headache for me.

Suggestions until FF decides a change :

1. When you want to check a component attached to some controls :
- Do absolutely not detach the controls.
- Just click on the component, copy it, and paste it on the side. You can easily check the settings.

2. When you want to test something :
- Do what you want to check.
- Then click on Undo and Redo to go back or forward.
This way you should succeed to test things without damage.
Sometimes FF doesn't allow to Undo/Redo something ( I don't know the reason ).

3. Often save your results when you are sure of what you did.
FF may crash, like any program, so it is better you save your works.

4. If FF gives you an error message while you are creating a filter, don't despair! Do not close FF or you will lose all.
- Try to save your work as "Save as". You can call your filter with a random name ( just to save your work ) : you can change the name after.
- Better you don't overwrite your previous save of the same the filter. Sometimes saving a filter while you have an error message may keep some error in the file you save. Keep safe your old work and save your filter with a new name.
- Once you are sure that you did all what was possible, close FF. Then re-open it and check the old and the new save of the same filter. If the new save works fine, you can delete the old one.

These are only simple suggestions.
We hope that FF can find a solution for the order of controls.

Is it related to Groups? If not, I'd appreciate a more detailed report on being unable to undo something.

Sorry. I can't remember.
It didn't happen many times. Just 3-4.
Next time I will check and send a report, hoping it can be useful. smile;)
