For certain types of filters its distracting to see the tiling in every direction. Perhaps a version that overlayed grey at 75% could work.

(I could just turn seamless tiling off but that changes everything)

I'm not sure what exactly the issue with seemless tiling is in your case, but I've gotten around having patterns/graphics bleeding all the way to the edge of the screen, (and thusly into each other as the graphic seemlessly tiled), but using the framing module, and limiting either the size, or replacing the margins with the original picture, or part of the graphic along the way seemed to accomplish what i wanted and avoid that edge bleed. Just an idea to help you get around the problem you're having, dunno if i understood the problem well enough to be of help but I tried. smile:)
