A built-in automatic updater, not unlike those you can see in Firefox or CounterStrike Source. Very easy, very convenient, no hassle. You'll see soon.
As for notifications, you won't need any. Like many online games, Filter Forge always requires you to have the latest client version to connect to the server. When you try to "Download More Filters..." from an outdated verson of Filter Forge, it will offer you to update.
