ok, i've made two filters now and i'm beginning to compile a wish list. my first item is i would love to be able to apply a filter and NOT close FF. currently FF will close when you apply any filter to an image. this is from the plugin side. i want to keep the thing open and apply another and another filter.

what would be even better would be if i could apply one filter to one layer back in psp and then apply another filter to a different layer in psp, all without having to close FF and restart it. this would speed up workflow immensely.

i dont know all the rules with parent-child applications, but if it could be done that would be great!

I agree with Craig on this. It is really imperative I believe to speed up workflow to have the FF window remain open while you apply the preset. Constantly having to reopen the filter program is time consuming and you lose your previous settings. Applying to separate layers would also be great but not as important upfront as having the window remain open while you apply presets.

Applying filters to separate layers is problematic because Photoshop SDK 6.0 which is used in Filter Forge doesn't provide access to specific layers. And we don't want to switch to the later versions of the SDK because that would make Filter Forge incompatible with non-Adobe applications like PSP or PhotoPaint.

ok, i understand about the layers.

so, right now i'm more using FF on the stand-alone side because it doesnt just automatically close down. having it close down on the plugin side after each apply is like having only one .8bf file only worse because FF takes longer to load than most .8bf's.

so, for now, just use the stand-alone if you want more than one effect and save each apply out as a new image and then simply take those new images and put them in layers in your graphic editor and blend as wanted.

Hi Vladimir.

Could we have a radial Gradient Please?

I'm afraid no -- because it cannot be made seamless.

Hmmm, again I have my doubts about this limitation. It looks like you decided to kick out several functions for the sake of seamlessness. For me personally the ability to create seamless textures in not the most important feature of Filter Forge. I wouldn't have any problems if the use of functions like "Radial Gradient", "Rotate" etc. would disable the "make seamless" checkbox as a consequence.

And in order to cope with possibly disappointed users you could simply add another category to the library called "non-seamless textures".

Yes -- exactly what I was thinking. I'll monitor what people say and what features they think are important, and if seamless tiling is not that critical, we may consider adding non-seamless operations.

Hi Vladimir.

I agree with Quasimondo. Seamless is not important to me. If components were available that lost the seamless capability then that’s fine. If I ever wanted to create a seamless filter then I could avoid those components.
I would rather have all components available to build non seamless filters.

Ken.

Ken, what non-seamless components would you like to have?

Rotate and Radial Gradient

Another one that would be really useful would be the convolution filter where we could input our own kernels

The ability to make selections (Such as select Highlights or Select reds)

I will post more here as I think of them

Kernels are pixel-based, and that would break the resolution independence.

Absolutely agree -- this area needs some serious work. Yes, this work can be done via Threshold etc etc, but the workflow is quite awkward. Plus, selections do not violate the seamlessness and are a familiar concept to Photoshop users.

i can quite understand vladimir: seamlessness is dangerous because it can destroy the beauty of filter forge. however, i consider some really cool things (e.g. polar coordinate transformations) important and highly recommend to add them!

having said that, I would like to add: a "Symmetry" component that helps to mirror/flip inputs and thus again creates a symetric output could be a most easy solution!

i just want to understand something here before i comment. when we're talking 'seamless' i see two things; one, you have a button called 'seamless tiling' already. that seems to just make additional copies of the current image. and then there's the whole tile by tile 'seamless' thing during the rendering of each tile within the current image, which is pretty seamless. so, which are we are talking about here?

if it's the current 'seamless tiling' thing, then i can live without that on many functions and would hate to be giving up options because of it.
