I think for the future it would be nice to have an area in the online where users can share interesting techniques or functional modules that they came across, which might not result in a good texture per se but may be very useful as a building block for further development.

For example - I have just submitted a Radial Gradient filter which is not really outstanding as a single effect, but it might be interesting for others to build upon.

Ideally the content of that area would also have a lower standard of requirements or even be open for all kinds of submissions.

Speaking about modules - I'd like to be able to import and export subtrees of a filter which would allow me to build up a library of functional modules that I can recombine.

Hmmm... sounds interesting. Maybe "Snippets"?

Agree but we should somehow notify the end (non-creator) users that these filters have little or no practical value.

Yes, we even thought of a separate section of the filter library for submitting "subroutines" or something like that. Also, that would work great if we add some kind of "subroutines" or component groups into the Editor.

ok, i commented on this in another thread and a few of us on retouchpro have already shared filters without going through the FF server. you still need FF to run them, so hopefully we're not violating any agreements here with vladimir and the rest of the FF guys.

vladimir, i do hope that is ok with you guys. we're simply passing around the .ffxml files a bit, ones we've made. zip them up, post them, and anyone with the FF program can download them, unzip them and put them in their 'My Filters' folder. works just fine. the filters themselves are not tagged with your registration code. so, anyone (with the FF program) can use them.

and vladimir, i commented on this on the retouchpro site a bit. you may see folks eventually selling the .ffxml files. most likely these would be ones that havent gone through the approval process on the server. it's going to happen. you may even see approved ones being sold, but i dont know who would buy them, since they'd have to have FF to use them and if they did, they could already get those through the download system.

but anyways, you might want to check with the legal guys on all this. i believe the last i heard, you cannot sell these outright without permission from the creator of the mother program. this was happening for a while in the game industry where folks were commercially selling mods of the big commercial games. the lawyers and courts stepped in and said no, not legal. but, the other side of this is, with something like photoshop you can sell your works created with PS. so, it might be worth checking into.

according to my own experience:

1) unfortunately, the fight against hackers cannot be won
2) some people will never pay a program, even if it costs only 1$
3) don't spend too much time and energy haunting the bad people. spend your time with the honest people!

btw, i can strongly recommend www.esellerate.com ! it gives you everything you need to sell/advertise/distribute/copyprotect your software!
