Update components in older filters

Let me begin with saying that I'm really glad with this active forum. I'm enjoying reading through old threads and learning quite a lot. Hence probably my many questions

I am looking inside an interesting filter by emme, called Sketchy Painting. It's quite extensive and of course takes time to render. As there are many obsolete components in the filter, I started to update some of them, also hoping to improve speed. But the updating is quite cumbersome and one easily loses or misplaces a connection in the process. I was wondering, isn't there an automatic way to update older components?
Maybe there is a newer version of emme's filter, because I got this one from an older thread. But my question still stands. I see myself still working with FF in versions down the road and it would be great if the updating of components could be made automatic.
