An example of this is the Polar Coordinates filter in Photoshop. After you apply the distortion you can reverse its effect by running the filter again with inverted settings.

The point is that in between the reversal you can apply different effects such as motion blur. These effects will then take on the shape of the distortion effect but leave your image mostly undistorted once reversed.

I agree -- that would be insanely cool, and we even tried to do that, but it did't make it.
