I was just thinking that expanding "Comments on Filters" strings by filter type in the Forum would help filtermakers keep their filters active and visable.....instead of quickly being pushed down the line in the one "Comments on Filters" string. When someone posts a comment on a filter, it would register in the corresponding comments string such as; "Comments on Filters: Frames"....."Comments on Filters: Building Materials"......"Comments on Filters: Creative".....etc. etc...

I have to say (again).....having only one "Comments on Filters" string in the Forum is extremely limitting. I think most viewers just scan the first group of filters at the top of the first page.....and with many new filters being submitted everyday and people trying to promote those filters along with their existing ones, everything gets burried and forgotten way too quickly....

So why not additional "Comments on Filters" stings by catagory so more people can get exposure on their filters??? .....instead of everyone having to jocky for the top spots in one string to get exposure.....which is clearly giving rise to the use of sock-puppet accounts to keep posts on top.....

Wow!!! No one 'on board' with this one, eh??? smile:) I would have thought people trying to obtain a free copy would have been on this one like flies on a cow pattie.....to help keep their filters visable, active, and on top for promotions smile:)

Okay, here's some more rationale for support of this suggestion.....

Let's say an architect wants to stay abreast of the newest building materials filters here. By dividing "Comments on Filers" strings by catagory, they would be able to go right to the "Comments on Filters: Building" string to see what's new. Under the current single "Comments on Filters" string, they would have to scan pages to find and pick out the building material filters.....which they will get sick of doing quickly.....and likely that they aren't going to do that at all.....

it's a mixed bag, steve. you can already search the library and see the presets. so, that part's taken care of.

the linear aspect of a single forum also has the advantage of exposing folks to all sorts of other filters than the one they may be wanting to find.

so, i tend to agree with dilla on this one.

Well, I was kinda talking about if someone just wanted to check out new filters thru the forum to see what's new. I would think that catorgorized filter comment strings would make it much easier for a serious user to go directly to the type of filters they want to look at.....without having to sift thru all kinds of other filters that they don't want to look at or use....

You and I only scroll down through the first handful of filters when we make comments on filters.....and I don't think anyone else would scroll down much further than that when checking them out either.....so I think it's more about being towards the top of a string....and the additional strings would put more authors there for a greater chance of exposure to readers.....

Rather than dividing up the 'Comments on Filters' forum category, this kind of functionality could be provided by an advanced filter library search feature. You could then constrain your search to 'new' filters within the 'building' category for example...

So, in conclusion:

- Expanding the Comments forum: -1
- Adding extended Filter Library Search features: +1

Dilla, the problem with your suggestion is that the search API in our CMS (the web site engine) is too stupid and limited -- it just doesn't allow this kind of customization. We'd like to tweak the relevancy algo as well, but alas...

Too bad search criteria couldn't be programmed by catagory and date.....because this sounds like a good idea that would be often used.....

I still think dividing the "Comments on Filters" string by catagories is a good idea to help prolong exposure for new and updated filters.....which is also a crucial promotional tool for authors who are trying to obtain the free copy. Filters get burried and forgotten much too fast with only one string.....and it happens in a heartbeat when one author decides to put some persistent energy into promoting their filters. You can hardly blame them for trying to take advantage of it, but it ends up being at the expense of everyone else who wants exposure on their filters too....

So, in conclusion smile:D It would not hurt anything....and would clearly help authors and users by having the "Comments on Filters" string divided into idividual strings by catagory.....

Meeting adjurned smile:D What??? You're not going to let me have the last word on this one??? smile;) smile:D LOL....

steve, when i go into the comments forum or the gallery forum, i check out every thread that says i havent seen a newly updated thread. yeah, i know, not everyone is going to do that, especially, perhaps, the more casual browsers. but, having to go to four or six or whatever number of forums to see the new stuff, isnt going to be that much different from simply going to the one and then on to page two of that one. so, i'd still rather see it kept as-is.

and vladimir, get a new engine smile:) sql servers arent that expensive.

I think you are not getting to much support on this idea because there are so many desires for alterations to FF itself first, for example I wouldn't care at all if filter forge got bomber particles if it meant that the time spent making the advancments to the program meant neglect of the forum; but that is just me.

With 3,000+ filters, I doubt anyone but filter makers bother to bask in the glory of the lower half of the forums ha-ha. If I was new to FF, I wouldn't bother. You want more exposure (or anyone for that matter) ? Use better keywords, and do more updates to old filters, pad them with one new feature at a time if you so desire. Or better yet, make better filters. In time, it will all sort itself out anyways. smile;)

Agree in part.....but I do think alot of users are looking at the top of the filter comments string.....because every time one of my filters goes there, it gets another chunk of downloads.....so there must be "lurker users" around smile:)

----Sure, compare the number of thread views to the # of posts in that thread, easy to see there must be quite a number of lurkers. In time, like with most forums, private or not, the # of lurkers will be multiple times the number of reguar post-ers.
----And just because someone downloads a filter, doesn't mean they use it. Lots of Low Usage filters have 200+ downloads, and meanwhile, I've had (or at least seen for sure) ones with under 100 downloads go HU. smile:p

All of that is very true!!! smile:)

I still think that new filter comment strings by catagory would be a really good idea here.....allowing users to go much more easily to review the most recent filters in their field.....because they are not going to dig for them with everything piled into one comment string.....

I think this is needed more and more everyday!!! You have multiple authors trying to keep their filters on top of one "comments on filters" string.....a much utilized exposure tool that is needlessly and severely limitted. Having multiple "comments on filters" strings by catagory would drastically reduce the "competitive" posting for the top positions of one string, more filters would get exposure at the top of multiple strings, and it would make it much more effeicient for users to view the most recent comments on filters in their particular field.....

Let's get real.....no serious users are going to scan past the first handfull of filters.....nor are they going to waste their time sifting through all the different types of filters piled into one into one string looking for the filters in their field.....

I think having multiple strings by catagory would actually make it a much more efficient tool for users.....and with more users utilizing it, more authors will get more exposure on more filters......

.....but lockable controls, customizable components, and lighting first smile;) smile:D

I wonder if the user cares whats said in threads apart from possibly filter use samples pics [ probable not even that ]. The users find the filters they want through keywords and the default/presets - this is self evident by filters HU comment or no comment the cream rises to the top,[ editors pick is probly the only real way to raise your filter and your own profile, and give an author credability ]. So for the small group of us who are consistently involved in the forums spreading the forum out would serve no purpose smile:)

Definitely not with everything piled in one string like it is.....but I think they would if filter comments were separated by catagory.....then the user could go right to their fiield of interest and see what's new and what filters are drawing attention.....

I do think some users are looking at the top handfull of filters in the "one" comment string.....because when I pop one of mine up there, it gets more downloads. Unfortunately, when someone decides to take advantage of this and "game" their filters to the top of the string, it's at everyone else's expense. Having it done as I suggested would greatly alleviate this problem.....

Throwing all different types of filters together and "Bottle-necking" all of them in one string is beyond ridiculous......in my humble opinion smile;) smile:D Filters are divided by catagory to make types easier to find.....divided into catagories when downloaded.....everyone wants folder options for better organization.....so why wouldn't organizing filter comments be a good idea, eh??? smile:) I would bet my bottom dollar that users would utilize it alot more as a tool if done that way.....because I would!!! smile;) smile:)

Finally, FF is choosing the Editor's Picks and manipulating filters to appear at the top of keyword searches......so my idea would greatly "even the playing field" for everyone so to say......

But wouldn't it be nice for those of us who are making the filters too? It does get (and has gotten) hectic as he said.

And if what he recognized in posting up his own filters taking a jumps up in downloads it's obvious that it's Users who are downloading them. I don't think people are really aware that there are probably more than twice as many lurkers here than posters. They are the ones that will see something and go tell their friends about it too.

I think what Steve is suggesting is very thoughtful towards the rest of us. He doesn't have to be, he certainly isn't doing it for his own benefit. That is, in my opinion, very cool. At least someone is thinking outside of themselves, and that's what's going to make all of us flourish or stagnate. It's just human nature, niceties bring smiles and good feelings all around, and in an environment like that how can you loose... and what will you loose doing it? smile;)

So??? It would at least be organized..... Say you wanted to see what's going on for new filters in the "Building" catagory.....there's no way to find out the newest filters thru a search.....and you certainly aren't going to start reading thru the kitchen sink pile in the filters comments. My way would make it easy.....just pop open the forum and go to the "Comments on Filters: Building" string.....and there you are!!! smile:)
