i often look at someone's filter in the editor and may make a slight change. normally, this is nothing i would re-post or re-submit, just something minor. and whenever i do so, i re-save it with a 'rev 1' tagged onto the name so i'll remember a year from now that this wasnt originally my filter. but, in re-saving the filter, it automatically sticks my name on as the author. and since i put the slight revision in there because that's the way i'd like to use the filter, i'm dont know if the original author is now getting credit through the usage collection stats for me using their filter

so, what i'd like to know is, if through my changing the author name (not on purpose) is the original author still getting credit for his/her filter and, if not, can i manually change the author name back to what it was originally and thus have the original author now get the credit in usage that he/she deserves?

That is an excellent question, Craig.
I'd be interested in being able to keep the author's usage rights intact too when the name change thing happens if I remove a background or add an extra control smile:D

Once you re-save a filter, it automatically lands in your personal 'My Filters' folder. Since obviously none of the filters in there have any counterparts in the filter library database, I don't think there are any usage stats being collected for them at all. The way I understand the usage collection system, you'll have to use the 'official' library version of the filter you'd like to see usage accumulated for.

that's probably true, dilla, but the author is still NOT going to get credit once i've re-saved the filter into my filters and am now using that. that doesnt seem right or fair to the original author.

Exactly my point, and I agree, it IS unfair to the author.

This is precisely the weakness of the system. But closing this 'leak' would also mean giving up the open source nature of FF, wouldn't it?

Well, you could add a "tag" to each filter......so no matter what else they become or where they are, stats would still register back to the original filter.....and have an option to shut it off.....but I doubt FF would ever go so far as to do something like this......

dilla, i really dont know. if it meant losing the open source feel, then i'm not for it, but if something like steve suggests or something else, i was just looking for a way to give authors a better chance at making their HU's.

A tag/cookie should do, well, I mean FF should be able to do that, if they wanted to, which I doubt they would wanna waste time on.

i dont know. it's to FF's benefit too. great pr when someone gets an HU, especially when they can cash in three for the freebie.
