i'm guessing vlad wont like this one, but i can see a use for it. instead of having one result component with two types, simple and surface, i'd prefer having these two types as separate components. the purpose would be to be able to use a switch in the GUI and change the types from there by the user.

you wouldnt be able to connect to both except with a switch component or things would get quite weird, or maybe there'd be a special component made just for switching to either.

the purpose of this is that i've had filters where i could go one way or the other, but why put out two filters when it's essentially the same arrangement and components when you could just use a switch to change?

in fact, you wouldnt even need two components. you could just put a switch in the GUI only that would allow for switching between the two.

Isn't leaving the 3 *surface* settings at 0 about the same as "bypassing" the height part really, and thusly giving people a choice like you're talking about ?

yeah, you could be right, especially the height. ok, so i'm getting (or have been for a while) old and senile.

I believe to make a Surface filter look more like a Simple filter, I think you also have to make sure that the height map is a flat tone/color. (And even then, I think the Surface Lighting settings may need to be adjusted "just right".) If the height map isn't flat there does still seem to be some sort of embossing effects going on (even when the 3 surface settings are at 0). (At least, from what I remember.)

Plus assuming such a set-up works, if you use the filter as a "simple filter", I think it might be much slower than if it actually was/had a switch to a simple filter...

By the way, Kraellin, you might be older than me, however, I think I could give you a good run for your money in the senile department. smile:)

P.S. In Photoshop, I often adjust the results I get from FF's surface filters. Here, it would be cool if I could still make the adjustments in FF (where the surface effects were treated like any other component). However, I think this has been previously suggested and shot down as impossible/impractical.
