The antialias submenu is located in the main application menu, but the settings applies to the actual preset in use (and is also stored with this if preset is saved or updated). I think this is somewhat counter-intuitive, and I actually only realized that the settings could be customized for each preset by accident when I looked at the ffxml contents.

Moreover there are AA related settings hidden away in the main application options under "Rendering Options" that should not really apply in general, but in relation to a preset: The help file states that a jittered sampling pattern can be useful to reduce moire patterns in high frequency pattern textures, and on the contrary: if you are rendering textures with straight lines and clear sharp transitions, jittered sampling can reduce the final quality - So obviously this setting relates to the actual filter and preset, and is not really suitable for a general setting.
It is similar with the option "Anti-alias sources for bitmap-based components". Some filters and presets uses small radii settings, others don't, so this should also be possible to specify for a preset.

My suggestion is that a button labelled e.g. "Antialias Settings..." is added to the filter settings tab in the lower region with the rest of the default controls ("Size/Pixels", "Variation" etc.). This button will open a small dialog that lets you control these things (AA on/off, sample count, edges only/all pixels, jittered sampling settings and aa for bitmapbased sources). This way its more intuitive that the AA settings applies to the preset and is not all a general and local FF setting.

Chosing the right AA settings is important both regarding performance and final quality, so it would be great with a more intuitive entry and more control over the sampling settings.

(please correct me if I have misunderstood aspects of how the AA settings work in FF)

actually, to my way of thinking, AA shld be a component, not a global. i'd like to AA certain parts of a filter but not all (sometimes). and, as such, i'd rather it were a component or part of component rather than a global menu item.

however, being how it is, i'd add one thing, a global command for changing all AA settings in all presets at once. this would just be an additional item, not a replacement to anything.

AA is a part of the rasterization phase, not something that is internal to the component, so you cannot AA a single component.
The only exception to this rule is inputs of bitmap-based components which can have AA on or off, since they they have a rasterization layer as input.

Just to make it clear: I'm not suggesting any AA components either, just that things in the front end (menues, options etc) are grouped logically, positioned intuitively with the other default filter/preset controls and that we can control jittered sampling and aa for bitmap based sources pr. preset like the sample count etc. smile:)

sorry, sphinx, didnt mean to hijack your request.

i had a look in options under the rendering tab and now i see what you're talking about. what the heck is 'jittered sampling'?

This has been already requested in 2008 and now 4 years after I wonder if this would be possible to appear in FF 4.0, it would be a very good and very useful thing for optimizing the speed of FF

YES, very good idea, you should be able to CHOOSE more easily and better the Antialias you want and not be forced to use always the default antialias setting stored inside the preset
