Right now it is a bit slow and convoluted to achieve this simple effect...

Cool! Reminds me of giraffe skin...has anyone thought of trying to make convincing animal skins? Leopard, tiger, jaguar, ocelot, chipmunk (oops) smile:D

uberzev, I'm not sure why you put the blur in - but onyXMaster taught ne a trick. Select "Seamless tiling" - the filter works about three times faster.

Also if you put in a Levels component (Black = 0, Gamma = 100, White = 1) between the Blend and Threshold components you'll pick up a few more "Webs".

Maybe you should use only a Gamma component (since you're not adjusting black and white points)?

I don't think I know what you mean.

Well, the original goal of the filter was to make a kind of 'baked earth' effect like you see it dry lake beds. I needed the blur to create a realistic height map.

byRo suggested to "put in a Levels component (Black = 0, Gamma = 100, White = 1)", and Onyx just said that this would be equivalent to use the Adjustments > Gamma component with the Gamma slider set to 100.
