As far as I know there are now 4 shape creator components:
Rectangle Free Rectangle Polygon Free Polygon Do you know any other ? Well my suggestion is to have a new component (or more than one) that could be able to make more complex shapes than basic ones (circle, rectangles, triangles, stars, rings, etc.) that are made by the above components. ALso would be useful perhaps an components for importing shapes from outside of FF, I mean to make them in another application with condition s and requirements of the FF component and then be able to import it, so could make them complex outside of FF, and FF would not have to generate it. Probably this could be done using vectors, but could be done probably using any other format. Thanks very much |

Great idea, SpaceRay! If someday FF supports vector, that would be a breeze! Imagine building shapes using bezier curves like in the curves editor, etc!! "From the moment we are born, we start being filtered..." |

I don't know about importing vectors, as FF has some technical limitations, but a bezier curve shape builder sounds like a great idea! Add my vote.

I am thinking in using the "get alpha" component to be able to take shapes from alpha images from specifically made alphas with images to have the shape you want and then import it into FF.
My idea is to make an image in Photoshop with the shape using an alpha, and then import that image using the "image" component and use the "get alpha" to take the alpha image from this and use it a mask for making the final shape. Probably it would not work, But anyway I will try to see what happens. |

You can build those out of the current components..

Please, if you know it, could you be so kind to explain how you could build shapes combining current components It would be very helpful. I have read all the Help user guide, and others in the wiki, and have been looking at some filters built with different shapes, BUT I am not able to understand HOW to use the Free rectangle, and Free Polygon to build different shapes AND/OR combine them with other components to build different kind of shapes. Until now I have been only able to make simple shapes, like rectangles, cubes, circles, stars, triangles, and flowers shapes (rounding the star) but not anymore. |

Remember the heart shape? It was made with a round ellipse and a gradient.
I think that's what CFandM meant. and you can also do some Boolean operations between shapes to get new shapes (like half a circle, a diamond, a cross, etc.). Nobody said it would be easy, though... ![]() |

Ok I agree with it, and understand the theory but HOW to put this into practice ? ![]() Is there any kind of tutorial or help text that explain HOW to mix shapes with gradients, and how to do boolean operations to get new shapes ? How you can combine the components needed to make these special shapes ? Please, Are there any kind of snippets for this kind of different shapes ? Any filters that already use this weird shapes ? thanks very much for your help |

Yep...Do a search for "Curve to Shape" then there is this one that I used that very filter but used the new beizer curves component.... Remember this is the building block of some shapes...

Thanks so much CFandM for the examples you posted. I have been trying to master shapes for a long time in FF and these are just what I need to study and learn from. Thanks again.

Morgantao, your snowmen are cute, but they are more like my recent cat filter. With layers of ellipse and polygons stacked one on top of each other. Your correct CFandM blows a lot of us out of the water.

Mardar, right after posting the snowmen I remembered your Cat filter. It's a great example of shape stacking.

OK, I can agree with this if you, that have lots of experience, say it, BUT what happens with beginners ? Please, is there a tutorial, guide or whatever to learn HOW to do it ? In the user guide is not shown how to combine the components to get the shapes you want I know it going to be like easy like making basic shapes, BUT I do not mind to learn to make complex shapes, but need a way to learn it and see how this can be done. ALSO there could be a list of filters that already use complex combinations of components to get the complex shapes. One silly example comes to my mind now (sorry I could not think another better) I was not suggesting a new component for making tetris shapes, but I think is a possible good example until I think a better one Build TETRIS shapes using FF (is simple shapes but not basic ones) Thanks very much Here are some Tetris shapes examples ![]() This tetris shapes could be used for example to make a photo collage as shown here ![]() ![]() And combine them to make other shapes ![]() AND then modify the shapes in more complex ones ![]() ![]() Even you could make letters with the tetris shapes as shown here ![]() ![]() |

Have a look at the construction the filter attached [ which was thrown together quickly for oposum ] the simple method is to combine two or more shapes - one masking another, you can see the same method in my clockwork [and from memory ] total control filters.
As for beginners, knowing the simple method and apply a small amount of logic to the construction you will find it is easy. Butterfly Origami (1).ffxml |

If I get some time in the next couple of weeks SpaceRay I will work on a tutorial of how to create shapes...As Carl said all the components exist to create shapes you just need to study the filters and how they connect to each other.....

I have seen the butterfly shaped filter and must say that IS VERY WELL DONE AND VERY INTERESTING !!! Lots of different shapes and then be able to combine them to make a bigger shape. Great. I will have to study and learn from this filter how you have done this. I attach below a screenshot for the ones that do not want to open the filter in FF editor.
Yes, I know, and this is why I want to learn the method of building shapes that you want and need and using the logic as you say it would be easy when you already know HOW to do it.
WOW, OH!!! This would be really useful and very interesting, and would be a pleasure to learn from a master and genius of Filter Forge as you are. Thanks very much for all your help (not only on this thread) and if you can, for taking the time to make it, it will be very welcomed and appreciated. |

I have just found again this thread, and is very good and interesting, and as I think that FF will not put additional more complex shapes and in the filter library snippets there are not available, I will make myself some new basic but more complex shapes as building blocks for building more complex shapes, by blending them together.
I will not be able to make any of the Tetris shapes because bomber is unable to join them correctly as it works only with square shapes |
