I have a filter that is a tiling type with noise over each part of the overall image.
Currently prototype with simple tiling but will later be more complex.

I want the noise to vary slightly on each 'tile' otherwise the repetition is obvious.
Map scripting (the bit that knows what I am doing at each row/column ! ) generates a colour and there appears to be no way of converting that to a number to feed a 'grey' connection such as 'variation' on noise?

Any ideas please? ( If one cannot do this - why not?)

Unfortunately there is no way to feed image data into grey inputs.

Instead of changing the noise variation, you can achieve the same result by using the color data to offset the noise (with the offset component). Use HDR values to make sure there is no repetition. For example, offset X by 1.0 for each tile. Or if you're using perlin noise and want to keep it clean, generate the noise within the map script using get_perlin_noise(x,y,z,scale).

I really wish there was a component that takes 1 sample from an image input and converts it into a gray control value. Or this could be done automatically when connecting green to grey. I guess there's some fundamental issue with FF architecture that prevents this - or else it would already be there.

Many thanks -- that saves me from knocking on a door that doesn't exist. And a useful idea for the effect. It does occur to me that control inputs are perhaps designed to be static and therefore feeding a dynamic value into them would only take the value on first call anyway. My question should perhaps have been 'why is variation grey' smile:-)
And as an ex programmer, I do tend to prefer one line of code to many boxes on a diagram smile;-)
