Using Textures
Author: GlennG. Will someone talk to me about how textures are used in PS CS4 with photographs, or point me to some tutorials? Do you just use Ff to get a texture onto a layer in PS and then use Define Pattern to save it? And then use a Bevel and Emboss layer style to apply it? Or are you using the texture filter from the Filters menu? Or both? Or others? How do they differ? I find this area interesting, but can find little in the way of resources.

I just had a little friendly concern after reading this :) .....and kinda misled by no controls with your "Metallic Emboss" filter.....me bad again :D Please don't take offense to anything I say.....because it is all said with a smile and a warm heart :) .....and besides, I've been known to be wr....wro.....wron.....wrong before :D LOL....

This guy is closer to a real monster than I have been doing. But, I think he is also pretty funny. I don't know what he is or where he came from, but I know he is not from around here. I liked the blue color and used my Color Texture Emboss filter to roughen him up even more ......

I attached an image of your "Height Map". If you remember that black is low and white is high, then you can see:
1) The mortar is much higher (and varied) than the bricks;
2) The "embossed" part of the brick is higher than the rest;
3) The brick surface, which should be the highest part is actually the lowest.

FF 10 Filter Editor doing weird stuff.
... filter and I load a test image it works fine the first time. But if I try to load in a second image it does nothing. And on the rare occasion that it does pass the image through there's an after image of the first test image showing through like a raised embossed effect. I have to save the filter and then it works as designed. Also, there's something going on with my mouse cursor. It moves around a lot faster inside the filter editor than anywhere else. :?:

Why? This surprisingly simple mathematical operation is the basis for the hallowed "Bevel/Emboss" layer style in photoshop, which is itself the basis for a whole world of graphical design techniques.

I am using FilterForge on a Mac with Photoshop CS5.5.
I will try the filter you suggested and see if it brings about my desired result.
Basically, I am trying to replicate the height effect seen in the photo below. Bevel Emboss doesn't work as it adds a height to all edges. This needs to look as if it is looking from the bottom right of an image.
I think this "Height" filter would be perfect. I just don't know why it is crashing my program. :?:

Making graphics with FF ... my Gallery
... for Mardar's Star frame to set it off. That frame is great because of all the flat areas in it that you can grab and re-filter. I used Craig's filter on it again and Gigi's GF Wireframe Generator on the star. I added a little detail to the face and embossed the cat a bit and added drop shadow. This was a fun one to do.

I used the image as the bottom and the texture and got this fantastic embossed rich new tile. Great job! This is going right into my favorites. ;)
