  • Filter Forge turns 1 today
... Forge is also 10 years old. It first occurred to me around 1996/1997. " ----Alright, Vlad wins then ha-ha, I didn't think of it til about 2003 or so, after seeing the Reaktor and Synthedit programs for making audio plug ins in a graphic modular environment. And well, I never made the program, just thought it was a logical high-tech next step for making Photoshop filters. ----Congrats on getting the first version done and out there, hopefully it gets noticed and inspires the next generation ...

  • SpiralGraphics announces Genetica 3.0!
... it is indeed great" Exactly!!! Although I don't like FF's lack of HDRI control in randomization and being unable to define HDRI control parameters, I find it quite superior to Genetica..... "James wrote: However with Genetica the HDRI/environments is quite new and at the moment limited to the canvas only really in terms of styles being applied" I agree.....Genetica applying HDRIs as "styles" is the problem.....which I think they are doing so users won't encounter any ...

  • Erosion in FilterForge
Author: Skybase. "Erosion is the removal of solids (sediment, soil, rock and other particles) in the natural environment. It usually occurs due to transport by wind, water, or ice; by down-slope creep of soil and other material under the force of gravity; or by living organisms, such as burrowing animals, in the case of bioerosion. - According to Wikipedia ...

  • Lab Adjust by Band by ronviers
... rendered images are watermarked." It would be nice to know both Maya and Poser. It looks like to make movies and games both would be necessary. My initial impressions are that without Maya, or something like it, the Poser output will have no environment to exist in. I really like the idea of a watermarked version of Maya for free. I would like to make a dinosaur. :)

  • New components
... should help the FF team to understand precisely what kind of component we may want, giving them some clear idea. I don't mean to give them the code and let them simply add it. But at least doing a little bit more than simply saying "I want a 3D environment", because it would be a too huge thing to do and it doesn't simply require a component. Then, let's post below this message some component idea, and let's see what FF team can do.

  • MISCHIEF - New drawing/painting app with scalability of vector and GPU
Author: SpaceRay. I have seen that there is available a new software that uses a new possibly revolutionary way of drawing and painting using the richness of pixel-based brushes AND the scalability of vectors” in a GPU-accelerated drawing environment. John Knack blog - A new drawing/painting app, Mischief (http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2013/06/a-new-drawingpainting-app-mischief.html) And in the above link there is a a short video showing how it works And in the Main website (http://www....

  • Second Life textures
Author: Mongoose King. Gold is hard to do as a texture, without the metallic sheen gold is just a kind of dull yellowy colour so using just a texture is always unimpressive in a 3D environment, the trick in SL is to use a low or medium shiny effect on a fairly bright yellowish metal texture, and add a little of the glow effect (usually not more than 0.1) to brighten it. Using twin layers of texture, with a shiny surface, then ...

  • Filter Forge not starting — FIXED
... hear you there, I literally dreamed of FF for easily 8-10 years before it was made, having come from EA's make your own pinball machine layout in the late 80's or so, and more recently Reaktor (audio) and Synthedit etc., where you use a graphic modular environment to create audio filters/effects/synths etc. :) jffe

  • Lighting Control
Author: jffe. Not sure what Onyx meant by "hurtful", but just eliminating certain lighting environs from the randomizer would be easy and not hurt anything. It could become a hair more confusing for users, but they need not use it, if it gets remembered/saved with the filter. It makes perfect sense to "limit" them though, since 2 ...

  • FRACTALS please!!! :)
... :) The formulas for fractals are given.....but what I think you are saying is how FF would program/set up the "generator" to create fractal images for import..... Like I said.....I would think that it would have to be a seperate environment by which to create the fractal image.....then import with a single external fractal image component..... I would be curious to hear from Vlad to how he was/is thinking about doing it???

  • Soap Bubble teaser
... differently depending on the incident angle... so... to fake it you would apply a gradient color radially from the center of the sphere, assuming you have a sphere already... Then map a second spherized channel with a generated texture to simulate the environment. The wave pattern is usually caused by 'rivers' of material flowing over the surface of the bubble giving slightly different densities per area, also effecting the refractive chromatic angles. (different colors) For this effect perhaps ...

  • Carl's Corner :)
... too far from my original position. Imo, awareness and morality are largely innate and exist on a spectrum. I have seen, and this is purely anecdotal, children that are fully realized. They can look at other people and tell if they are good or bad. No environment, no matter how rotten can turn them into bad people, but it may make them crazy. While others are born so bad that the best that can be hoped for, with enough love and compassion, is that they will act civilized. Just like the big E was ...

  • Colorful Dual-Mode Geometric Glass by DJI
... another one of the available ones. https://filterforge.com/upload/forum/201/Capture.JPG Now, one suggestion is that what would be really awesome is that a source image could be reflected in the triangular mirrors additionally overlaid of the Environment lighting, I mean fragmented in the same way. This reminds me and may be similar in some possible to what the artist Mathias Kiss have done in these mirror sculptures Can be seen here (https://oraclefox.com/2014/05/20/mathias-kiss/)and ...

  • Q&A about HDR and Math – ask your questions
Author: CorvusCroax. "Vladimir Golovin wrote: "Best" for what purpose? " Uh... The most elegant way? I'm finding that, with just the little bit of working with the new HDR environment, I end up with bits and pieces of out of LDR range values, when I need an LDR value. (But I can't see them withought poking around w/ the eyedropper) So I thought there might be some simple way to clip the image back down to LDR. "Mike ...

  • Abstract art techniques?
Author: Skybase. Fractalist: nice work. Do love the color usage you got. PB at this point is unfortunately dead thanks to Adobe being a bit unconfident about it. It's understandable seeing PixelBender attempting to run on GPU when nobody's GPU environment performs equally. It's currently still chilling as a legacy tool since people still use it anyway. At this point I don't see any similar tools that work with the CC suite. Although if anybody's interested as an alternative to FilterForge there's ...

  • Examples of 2D image converted 3D using ThreeDee´s Spherical Previewer
... the same filter :p So no matter what input there is it's the same output. :p The catch with the categorization of 2.5D is that if there's any form of 3D-fakery going on (utilizing depth, perspective, overlap, shading, color, lighting). In a true 3D environment, as an observer, you can rotate around the object and see things actually protruding out into empty space. I just take it as something positively awesome that FilterForge works like this :p Try this! Given we've been tinkering with displacement ...

  • just some odd images here and there
... thanks, steve. not sure what i'm using there. i think it's a profile gradient mixed with a perlin and some other stuff to give that varied look. i'm not sure what the unevenness in the lighting. that could be that i used a light or a custom lighting environment. not sure, but i kinda like the light at the top and darker at the bottom. it gives it a light from above but the rest of the rock shades it, thus giving it some 3d shape... sort of. the high grain on the top and lower grain on the bottom ...

  • HDRI Upload/download Library?
... you place a round dot with radius 10 with center at 50;50 or 150;50 on a 200x100 image, it will end up as a proper circular "light source". On the other hand, if you place it at 75, 75 for example, it will get distorted in a final lighting environment, since it will be projected on a sphere with a distortion. The safest zones to place artificial lighting are W/4;H/2 and W*3/4;H/2 coordinates if W is width and H is height (W/H should be equal to 2 as I mentioned before).

  • Filter Forge radically changing the dynamics of computer art?
Author: jffe. There's been graphic modular environments for audio apps out for years now, Reaktor, Tassman, Vaz, SynthEdit, and many more. SynthEdit even allows you to export as vst that can be used by people who don't own the SynthEdit program, in any number of audio host apps. Ultimately, those ...

  • The Next Big Thing
... assembled from regular 2D points, which, in turn, are assembled from floating-point coordilates, which, in turn, are calculated via normal math operations like additions, subtractions, trigonometry etc. Implementing all this in a non-Turing-complete environment of Filter Forge, which also doesn't support any other data types except for the hard-coded Green, Blue and Gray, would be a giant kludge. That's why we opted for a Turing-complete visual language with arbitrary (and custom) data types. ...
