How about we try a more subtle use of noise. Let's try and emulate the following surface...

I really can use all this info. Thanks Crapidilla for taking the time to do this. As for the second to the last post of yours, that looks real! I will try it, but I don't think I will be too successful.

Hehe. Yeah, I wish. ![]() Actually, this is a research thread for my Noise Lab article (which is under contruction). Would be nice if more people took part and posted their noise experiments... --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

I actually thought CF was onto something with that video tutorial.....
Your "Noise Lab" is looking great!!! Are you going to submit these last noise creations??? Those last two are the best "customs" I've seen to date here..... Steve

CF? Video tutorial? ![]()
Probably not anytime soon. I'm currently focusing on experimenting with just the height maps, not on building full-featured filters. --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

The joy of repetition...
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In this example, I blended several instances of the same noise. The instances were offset incrementally on the vertical axis. This technique lends itself well to industrial surfaces. ![]() --- Crapadilla says: "Damn you, stupid redundant feature requests!" ;) |

ah, interesting. that last one could have some really interesting uses, like wood carving in progress, cut stone, scales (as in fish scales), and so on. nice.
and without actually trying this out yet, i'm guessing you could take one of those perlins and before hitting the blend, you could add a levels in there to get some interesting shading. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

The wave crests in the first image do seem to have perspective to them, but the underlying perlin doesn't. Consequently - it appears - the water depth should increase towards the top of the picture, meaning that colors should get darker.

How would I do that? And how would that tile right?
The perlin is supposed to be coral reefs. |

You'd have to use a gradient, but I won't tile right. The workaround - as always - would be to squarify you image before using the filter, then crop it afterwards. Case after case it becomes ever more clear that we need those proportional gradients!

I think I will take it over to the other computer after I have slept to see what it does in Bryce. The top areas would become darker automatically from the distance.

and i disagree slightly about making the top part darker...just slightly. you could also do a gradient blur to get a distance look. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

and btw, dilla, you might want to take a look at doing the same things you're doing with noise components but using color controls plugged in in various 'odd' locations. i experimented with that a while back and you can do some interesting things with a 3 color grad plugged in where you might not normally plug one in.
