Thanks Carl – it's a pretty cute trick but the effect is lost with non-square images. You're still the king of the atmosphere filters. smile:)

I wanted to show how this filter can be used with non-square images by first setting the canvas size to square then cropping after the filter has been applied.

cool trick ron, it's so simple but i would have never thought of that. i too was lamenting that i couldn't use this with non-square images, but it just takes a little ingenuity and all is well. thanks!

I TOO was lamenting that it isn't easier to use this beautiful filter with non-square images; the trick is doable but inconvenient over time, especially if you've got a pretty large canvas in the first place !=)

ronviers, this is a new fave of mine, and while I haven't used it a lot yet, it makes me smile. Kind of feels like "light coming through venetian blinds", only more creative and stylized, and I bet I could pull off some cyberpunky madness in the tone of Blade Runner with this.

Thanks for such a fun filt!

i'm sorry, ronviers, but could you elaborate? you set what canvas size, FF's, photoshop's, what? and are you cropping or re-sizing again after applying? i know you said cropping, but...

Sad but true. The good news is its relatively fast and Photoshop is an industrial product capable of handling billboards.
I like the idea of a Blade Runner mood. Maybe I could add some smoke particles and a color cast for a theme based atmosphere – now if I could just think of a way to add a Rachael checkbox. smile;)

Thanks and good luck using it.

Hi Kraellin – I know you do not need step by step instructions but to avoid any confusion in the future I will add a sample with the steps I used – there may be better ways.

Here are the steps I used to work with a non-square image for this sample – here is the before.

Image>Canvas Size
The width of this image was 994x1448
Make a note of size of the height and width
Copy the larger number and Paste it over the smaller number
In this case the image is now 1448x1448
It's a good idea to choose a canvas color that contrasts well with the image but really not necessary
I chose black for this one
Filter>Filter Forge
Apply the filter
Select the Crop tool and put the original height and width values into the height and width boxes of the options bar
Cropping is then easy because PS will constrain the size of the cropping tool and the arrow keys can be used to place the crop before it is accepted

If anyone has any questions they can use this thread or the 'E-mail' link.

ok, so you changed the aspect ratio in photoshop before applying the filter and then changed it back after applying FF. is the crop tool the same thing as the resize in paint shop pro? that might be what was throwing me on this. because, i think of cropping as cutting part of the original image off.

oh, ok. now i see why you're using the crop. ok. you're changing the canvas, not the image size or aspect ratio of the original image. clever smile:)

Thanks for the vote of confidence Carl. smile:) Funny, this filter feels like cheating because it is FF that does all the work all I did was plug in a few components. smile:|

Yes rss, but before when I clicked on it nothing would happen. Now I right click on it and 'copy link location' then paste that link into the box at this site 'sendmerss.com'. After that the updates come to my inbox. I guess it would work with forums but that might be a lot of emails. Also there may be a lag.

Maya stuff

Still modeling. I had a serious conceptual delay last week. In Maya I have to be able to move easily between spaces like world, local, object, normal, gimbal and even localized temporary spaces defined by a point, edge or face. My problem was that I kept trying to break the xyz up by defining a space for one axis but have the other two axes remain in a previous space. It took me three days to find my error – that's the problems with trying to do this while not being very smart. If I had been in school it would have put me hopelessly behind. But now I'm back on track. smile:banana:
I will be glad to put polygonals behind me. Then I either have to do NURBS or do some texturing then come back to NURBS. Texturing is by favorite; I like 2d and 3d procedurals but I also like hand painted too. After texturing and NURBS this project will require rigging, animation and dynamics. So I am a long way from posting anything. smile:|
Now with you fancy pants new computer this would be a great time for you to download Maya. You know you might as well get started. smile:)

Well that makes me thick as a brick, from what you've said about Maya and others have said it would take me along time to get my head around it, I have been looking around for a good 2d animation program [ yes free of course ] to do some short films, I found on that looked excellent but it wouldn't run on Vista smile:cry:

When modeling with polygonals the vertices are connected using straight edges while in NURBS modeling the vertices are connected using curves - the curves are very similar to the Bezier curves used in AI.
Come to think of it, that's a pretty darn geeky thing to say. smile:D

I know this is not a viable option but I have been noticing that Maya is a very powerful 2D editor in that it allows for the characters to be designed and animated in 3d but then rendered in 2d using Maya's vector renderer. For me this would you easier than trying to illustrate each frame.

Hey Carl, I came across this today:

I am using the free version for sketching and eventually for storyboarding. They do not mention Vista explicitly but they do not rule it out so maybe it will work. smile:)

Hey it's pretty cool the only drawback seems that you can't save it as a gif or in a format that allows the animation to be saved only as statics or I'm mnissing something well have another look tomorrow ......... have you seen this before

It looks like their proprietary pap format will save the animation but that is no substitute for gif or png. Maybe the versions you have to pay for will do that.
Please let me know what you eventually settle on for 2d animation. My head is not really into the problem right now but I will have to come back to it. Speaking of which, I found this link:
http://www.idleworm.com/how/index.shtml

You're probably way beyond this but the walk cycle was just what I needed. smile:)

No problem. Nothing seems more natural than for people to comment on my filters – I never question that. But when people do not comment on them I formulate theories as to why they refuse to comment. In your case however, you have earned a pass. You have been so cool to me and others about commenting and criticism that you always get the benefit of the doubt. smile:D
