This is unbeleivable ........... I have a three year subscription with McAfee for their security centre which is valid till 2012 cost me around $300 Aud [ can't rememder the exact amount ]. A couple of days ago an automatic update came through which required a restart, on restart the pc frooze when it got to the point of launching McAfee. Spent an evening on the phone to McAfee to fix it. A new auto update came through [ thought it probly was to fix there problem ] required another restart. On restart there Security Centre opens and tell me the software will deactivate in five days, click here to reactivate, clcked and it took me to their website where they are demanding more money from me to reactivate [ see attached ], are they going to keep deactivating it and I have to pay more money to reactivate it. As far as I can see it I made a contract with them for 3 years, there is no mention of them charging more fees, will they keep doing this when ever they want more money out of me. Surely this isn't legal?
Anyone else use McAfee and getting the same happening? |

Sounds like the update unintentionally erased your activation, I'd contact support and try and work it out with them.

the program is working fine that was just a bad update fr om them, and I have contacted them, they just have decided to demand more money for a service that I have already paid for. There is no tech error. I sent them this message
I have a three year subscription to your Security Centre expiring in 2012. with your latest update, it say it will deactivate in 5 days, to reactivate you want more money from me. I paid for your service now you want more money from me, this is outrageous. Tell me their has been some mistake or you can refund the balance of my subscription and I will go else wh ere for my security. I will not pay you more money. They have not replyed [ hopefully they will before the deactivation date ] crash this is interesting { thanks to the person who sent me the link, I don't know whether you want to be named } |

I would get a live person at McAfee and demand that your money be refunded....otherwise, given that there are countless others with the same problem, hell will freeze over before you get a response from them.....
Suggest getting Sophos Antivirus.....rated the best.....more money.....but I swear by it now. I had McAfee.....it failed me twice and let a virtumonde virus in twice.....had to totally clean out and reload entire computer both times.....and McAfee sucks, IMO!!! If you can't afford Sophos, then the next best alternative is "Bitdefender", IMO.... Steve

Is there anything that's particularly bad about Windows Defender? I ask because that's what I'm using on the Windows 7 install I have dual-booted on my iMac.

No, it's good to have.....MS has improved it quite a bit.....focussed on blocking windows-specific hijack/adware/malware programs.....want to use it in conjunction with a good antivirus program. I would also suggest using "Spybot Search & Destroy" (freeware) and enabling programs resident teatimer.....which does an excellent job of protecting system files.....but need to disable Teatimer when installing programs.....especially AV programs that read system files. Another good freebie is Spywareblaster in which you can save system snapshots and use them to restore if something happens..... Steve

carl,
i use AVG (free version), zone alarm (free version) and win patrol (free version). the three of these together have kept me virus free for years now. all three install easily and pretty much stay out of my face. they eat very few resources and are very effective. i'd actually recommend getting the pro version of win patrol because you get all of their help and 'what's this' pages, which can be quite useful for keeping you from deleting false positives. i will never use norton or mcafee. both are pretty invasive programs and want to take over your entire system and can be problematic in getting rid of, too. and i dont know about mcaffee, but norton tends to be a resource hog, also. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Hey Everyone,
Well,...I used to use McAfee, 10+ years ago, had way too many problems. Guess I am one of the lucky ones as I have been with Norton by Symantec for a good 10 years. I had some problems awhile back, turned out it was a parental setting that was blocking my automatic updates, long since resolved. The last several years have been trouble free & the software keeps improving, we even use Norton @ my work now. I use Norton Internet Security, this year I also have Norton Utilities. Here in the US, if you watch the sales you can get a rebate from them & the store you purchase the product from. All I have been paying ea. year is the sales tax pretty much. The computer Tec person who maintains all of our computers at my work told me, that it is better not to have too many different programs on the same computer, competing with your security program as it will cause conflicts. To each his/her own, as long as it works. That was a real bad trip Carl ![]() Have a GREAT day! ![]() Ron zazzle.com/Ronspassionfordesign*

that can happen. you just have to know what each one is doing. zone alarm is a firewall. avg is anti-virus and win patrol checks that folks arent trying to take over your computer startup stuff, which is where a lot of nasty viruses want to reside. so, each of those 3 never conflicts with the others because they just dont look in the same places for trouble. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Several years ago, I wrote an event booking software for a client, that used a lot of small files (each booking), that it synced over the network to server. All was well until one day, when they called me and said that it was dreadfully slow suddenly. The startup took 5 minutes, not 10 seconds. They had installed some new software on every of the 200 laptops they used. After some analyzing, we found this sequence of events. (a) My software wanted to open the first (of 1500 files) (b) The antivirus program jumped in. © The encryption program now decrypted the file. (d) The antivirus now could read and analyze the file (e) The Antivirus closed the file (f) The Encryption program now encrypted the file again (g) My application was how handled back control (h) The encryption program now decrypted the file. (i) I could read the file (j) I closed the file (k) The Encryption program now encrypted the file again (l) Repeat 1500 times, or more.. So I had to create one large file with all the small files in it, then I was back to 10 seconds startup. This could easily happen to a program like FF when you have 5000 filters... - I never expected the Spanish inquisition |

Yup, both are bad news....
....and has an AV.....don't ever want to use more than one firewall or AV....so if you use Zone Alarm for both, you need to disable windows firewall and any other AV program....
I have to warn to stay away from any of the free AV programs....needlessly suck huge resources, always read false positives, and will read system functions as viruses too. Some free programs are good....but none of the freebie AVs.... Steve

microsoft recently launch Security Essentials [ free ] which has been reviewed very well and I tryed out, it picked up things McAfee didn't, has a small footprint and is on guard all the time, I thought it was pretty good and will probly in the future just use that with spybot, spyblaster and malawarebytes and that should cover it ![]()
it doesn't pay to have to many installed can be painfully slow to launch, I moved some to another file, I just wish FF could load files out side of the program with out mucking around ![]() |

Although I haven't personally tried it, some 'geek' buddies of mine say that "Advanced System Care Pro" (pay version) is pretty good.....it includes system optimization, overclocking, antivirus, realtime adware/malware protection, Defragmentation, etc.....all in one package and very straightforward to use. Trial version is missing some needed repair ability.....
http://download.cnet.com/Advanced-Sys...99324.html Personally, I would suggest what you already have (Spybot, Spywareblaster, and Malwarebytes) with either Sophos or Bitdefender antivirus.... Steve

steve, you really need to quit indulging in these gross generalities. AVG is a very good anti-virus. it has a free version and a pay version. both are good, are updated regularly and i've had maybe one or two false positives since i started using it years ago! also, zone alarm does have an AV, but that is the pay-for suite. you can get just the firewall by itself and get it for free. and yes, it's generally not a good idea to use two firewalls or two AV's on the same system, though i find the one exception to this is if you have a software firewall like zone alarm and a hardware firewall like in a router. i shld also mention that even though i dont like norton overall, they do have an extensive virus finding and testing lab, probably the largest on the planet. so, though i dont like the invasive quality of their stuff, it probably is a very extensive anti-virus program. If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!

Really??? The only "gross generality" here is to say that AVG is a very good anti-virus.....when it is well-known to be a bottom-of-the-barrel, crappy anti-virus program that people get because they don't want to pay for or can't afford a good one. I know many who have had AVG, viruses got by it, and took their machines down....they learned the hard way.....and now pay for a decent anti-virus program.....which nowadays is the most important program you can own to protect your machine.... steve, my only point isnt if avg is good or not; it's the use of negative generalities. by saying 'all things are bad', a negative generality, one tends to paint a rather bleak, unreal picture, especially when backed up with 'everyone knows' and 'they' and 'many'... more generalities.

At first I was offended with how you put that....but I'm over it....
![]() I do have first-hand experience with both AVG and Avast.....installed them on friends machines.....lots of conflicts, ate alot of resources and noticably slowed machines, and eventually did let viruses in. If someone can't afford AV service, I would even suggest going without one of the freebie AVs and just use MS Essentials, Defender, Spybot, and spywareblaster.....which conflict with the freebie AVs. When I got my two virtumond viruses that tagged all system files, blocked restore, etc....the only programs left standing were Spybot and Malwarebytes.....but viruses did so much damage, had to be safe than sorry and re-install everything..... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Steve

noted. wasnt intended. quite odd that we've had such completely different experiences with the same program. AVG has always installed quite easily for me, always updated easily and never noticably interfered with resources. and, that's not to say that anything you just said was wrong... it's just odd. never heard of Sophos AV, but may well look into it now ![]() ![]() ![]() If wishes were horses... there'd be a whole lot of horse crap to clean up!
