So, I've been making a filter of bullet holes on glass, and I'm trying to get some nice reflections on the glass, I tried making it slightly wavy, which works, but you have to do a lot of tweaking in lighting to get the reflections nice, but not over done..
Does anyone have any tips for how to get good reflections onto a mostly flat surface? ![]() Release the Mongoose! |

Hi Mongoose king.
1) Look at some actual pictures of what you're trying to make. 2) Use a reflection map particularly made for it. Make an HDRI that looks like what you want to reflect, and then load that into FF as a new environment. 3) Tilt the shards ever so slightly. 4) Check out some of the glass filters already made: http://www.filterforge.com/filters/4954.html |

Hi Mongoose King
Here is a trick that uses metalic, reflectivity and height, in combination with global height and hdri to give a look of partial surface reflections. I made this a long time ago using v1 so I don't know how much is applicable to v2. BehindBeveledGlass.ffxml @ronviers |

Ohh, that works good, I was looking at your filter Add Atmosphere too, I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to get the reflections seamless too, this wi be really helpful though.

You know, I was playing with that earlier. I got the seemlessness worked out but I had trouble with that gradient rounding error. Sphinx. told me how to fix it but I forgot and had to get busy. This might help. I will look at the error again tomorrow. BehindBeveledGlass v2.ffxml @ronviers |

I had another go at removing the gradient error but it didn't work. Seems if I change the limits of the gradient, I have to make a corresponding change in the threshold. I will look at it again later.
Btw, was that filter crashing on your system? Here is a version that does not crash, just in case you want to look at it. BBG2 a.ffxml @ronviers |

Hmm, I really expected that last one to work. I rearranged the components to look like rockets, that fixes most things – I’ll try skulls. @ronviers |

Look at this. All I did was add the crash switch and it made it completely stable - at least on my machine. This is an odd filter.
Hey Ron, if you hear back from ff about this problem please let me know what they say. Thanks. BBGtest c.ffxml @ronviers |

hmmm, strangeness.. So that new one crashes for me too. However I decided to open the first error one and go to edit mode straight away before it starts rendering, so I could take a look. So, I go into edit as soon as I open it. I take a look, and rearrange the components a bit, then quit out of edit back to the main screen, and then it works fine for me and has done since. :S *head explodes*

Well, the error has come back again for me. Very strange. Anyway, I've been playing around with other ideas, and I've added some fakey reflections using noise, and added the option to have the image as a reflection.
I'm just using the hdri reflections for a rippley glass option, which I prefer as I can now have a bit of ripples, and have a big reflection across the whole pane too. Plus it means I can have a reflection of the place I want to use it, without having to have a hdri or it. Here's what I have at the moment, looking a lot better, I think fake reflections are probably best for this particular filter. (decided this is a better way to show it as the first one looked rubbish without the alpha) ![]() Release the Mongoose! |

The fakey solutions have a lot more flexibility. Here is one by voldemort that may help.
I will continue to work on this but it will be a while before I can get to it. If I resolve it I will post back here. @ronviers |
